memories of another life

Danica had been dealing with a headache all day. It had been the day after the burlesque party and she knew she shouldn’t have gone out. She shouldn’t have drank as much as she did. It wasn’t a hang over, she knew how to deal with those, having medicated herself once or twice with booze to avoid confronting her emotions and demons had taught her well. She could handle those headaches. Today however brought on a different headache. She wasn’t sure what it was, of course her mind traveled to the worst-case scenario. She rolled her eyes at her insanity.

She walked to the bathroom and got a cream white bath towel out and put it on her counter. She walked over to the tub and turned the water on, fingers playing in the water coming from the tap until the heat was to her liking, reaching over to the other side of the tub she grabbed the plug and put it into the drain and left the bathroom. Walking the short distance to the double white, French doors to her bedroom she pulls the handles down and pulled to doors towards her and steps into her bedroom. She takes a left of her bed and goes to her closet, opening the doors to her closet she grabbed a pair of grey pajama pants and their matching, flowing tank top. She grabs anything else she needs then closes the doors and walks through her room back to her bathroom, placing her pajamas next to the towel.

Turning around she looks at the water filling the tub. Her eyes fixate on the sight of the water while her ears are drowning out everything, including the voices in her head in favor of the running water. Water had been her trigger since as far back as she could remember. It stilled her, calmed her and sent her into a trance all its own. She could stick her hand in water and she could easily play with it for forever and completely lose track of time and anything else going on around her. It was a tranquility and calmness she found when she didn’t have Arthur close by. Finally blinking she snapped back to reality and pushed herself off the counter, reaching down she turned the taps until the water turned off. Danica stepped back from the tub and removed all article of clothing she had, letting it drop on the floor where it was removed. Stepping away from the pile of clothes she lifted one leg and stepped into the tub followed by the other.

She stood in the water only a moment before she sat down and rested her head on the back of the tub. Her eyes closed, the cool porcelain at the nape of her neck helped combat the heat from the tub raising to her head. It helped the headache seem to disappear within a few short minutes of her resting like this. However she was never one to lay like that in the tub for long. Her body shifted and her head slowly submerged in the water. Her eyes closed as her ear sank under the water and her blonde hair floated around her. Her mouth and nose remained above water, the water drowning out the sounds outside of her bathroom.

She inhaled deeply as she let the water wash over her, heat relaxing her, steam rising from the tub. Soon the darkness of her eyelids are met with flashes. Flashes of Arthur, clad in orange and green. They were seeming to fight, anger in both their faces. Their lips moving but as if the mute was pushed and she couldn’t understand what was going on. Before long they both look defeated and apologetic in their words and they embrace. There was also another, a young boy who fought alongside her and Arthur, she could read a screen as the words Aqualad flashed across and the young boy took off running. She saw another flash, of her son, of her and King Arthur’s son? She seen the love they both had for the small child, then she seen the kidnapping and the death of the baby as if it was happening to her right then and there.

As quickly as that flash came another one came on. Arthur and her fighting, she attacks him, lunges at him with all the rage in the world and he with an object in hand plunges it into her body. His eyes widen as she falls back and her world goes black. Suddenly her eyes open and she’s back in her bathtub. She gasped and quickly sat up from her position. Wiping the water from her eyes, she drops her hand and frantically looks around, eyebrows furrowing and her breathing quickening, chest rising and falling in a quickened pace. She reached down and pulled out the plug and stood up, stepping out of the tub.

She dressed in what she set out for nighttime and left the mess on the floor in the bathroom. Her breathing quicker and quicker as her vision started to skew and the room started to spin and double vision kicked in. She grabbed onto the counter and the door frame as she struggled to walk. She looked to her left in the living room, eyes narrowing on her phone. Her panic attacks hadn’t been this strong in a long time and she didn’t know how to come down from it. She pushed herself off the door and stumbled to the living room.

She fell to the ground, tears having long been flowing from her eyes without her knowledge. She reached for her phone and through panicked breaths and blurry vision she couldn’t tell if she unlocked her phone and gotten to Arthur's number in time. Unable to hold herself together anymore her eyes rolled to the back of her head and the phone fell from her hand as the rest of her body hit the floor. Arthur’s contact page open but she was unable to make the final press to call him.
